Tornos-Bechler has it's roots back to 1860 in the Jura Mountain regions of Switzerland. This was an area where the production of watch making machinery was born. In Moutier, Switzerland, the Tornos Company acquired firms of Bechler and Petermann and began to produce machinery that could make the intricate parts used in watch making. Their equipment could make these parts faster and with the high degree tolerance.

These three companies merged to Tornos-Bechler, which became a world leader in the production of what is now known as "Swiss-type" high-precision turning automatics.

They continued to build and sell cam-controlled automatics in a wide variety of types and models. Today there are over 40,000 Tornos automatics in operation worldwide.

In 1942, they introduced the popular M-7 Series. In 1960, the company developed multispindle automatics which allow more operations to be performed faster. Tornos continued to be a technological leader designing new features and attachments, such as automatic bar loaders, for its automatics.

In 1996, the company unveiled its DECO 2000 single spindle, sliding headstock automatic. It was the first computer controlled automatic that could match the speeds of the fastest cam-operated machines.
